Terms of use

DEV.B is a free community warning tool. It helps neighbours warn each other. It is not an official emergency service.

Terms of use

By installing or using the DEV.B app or this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use DEV.B.

  • DEV.B warns; it does not instruct. Alerts come from other people's reports and confirmations, not from the government or emergency services. Always follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services.
  • In an emergency, call your local emergency number. DEV.B does not contact emergency services for you.
  • You decide what to do. You are responsible for your own safety decisions. An alert, or the lack of one, is never a reason to ignore danger you can see or official advice.
  • DEV.B is free. We may change, pause or stop the service, and we will update these terms when we do. Continuing to use DEV.B after a change means you accept the new terms.

Service limitations

Please read these carefully. They describe how DEV.B can fail.

  • It depends on people. An alert spreads only if other people nearby have the app, have it turned on and confirm what they see. In places where few people have the app, warnings may travel only a short distance, or not at all.
  • Bluetooth has limits. Phones pass alerts to each other over short distances. Walls, terrain, distance, low battery and phone settings can stop an alert.
  • Background relaying has limits. If you close DEV.B by swiping it away, it stops passing alerts on. iPhones limit Bluetooth when locked, so locked iPhones find each other slowly.
  • Alerts can be wrong. Confirmations by people nearby reduce false alarms, but cannot remove them. Real dangers can also be missed.
  • Distances are approximate. Locations are rounded to about 200 metres to protect privacy.
  • Shelter information may be incomplete or out of date. In the test version, shelters on the map are examples, not real places.
  • Internet and SMS fallback are not yet available. In the current version, alerts travel only phone to phone over Bluetooth.
  • Translations are being checked. Most languages are first drafts awaiting review by native speakers.

Using DEV.B fairly

DEV.B only works if people can trust it. Please do not:

  • send false reports or confirm dangers you cannot see;
  • use several phones or fake devices to push alerts;
  • put names, insults or private information in report notes;
  • try to disrupt, copy or misuse the service or other people's phones.

The app limits how many reports a phone can send and gives less weight to suspicious patterns. Phones that repeatedly send false reports may be blocked.

No warranty

DEV.B is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not promise that it will work at all times, everywhere, or that any warning will reach you in time. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or harm arising from using, or being unable to use, DEV.B, including from alerts that are late, missed or wrong. Some countries do not allow these limits; in that case they apply only as far as the law allows.

Accessibility statement

DEV.B is designed for everyone, including people who cannot read well, older people, children and people who are colour blind.

  • No reading required for the main actions: one big red button to report, and large green and grey buttons to answer.
  • Every alert level has its own colour, shape and sound: a circle for possible danger, a square for be ready and an octagon for danger confirmed. They can be told apart without seeing colour.
  • 30 languages, including right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Urdu.
  • Buttons are labelled for screen readers.
  • Large text and touch targets throughout.

We know there is more to do. If something is hard to use, please tell us at contact@devdotb.com.
